Book Review: A Murder of Furies by Eleanor Kuhns

A Murder of Furies is historic cozy.

Knossos, Crete. 1450 B.C.E. At nearly seventeen, Martis is an accomplished bull dancer and an apprentice to the healer. The last two years of her life has been colored by mystery, and she faces it once again. Tinos is the consort to the High Priestess and former bull dancer she considered a friend. He asks Martis to help his daughter, nine-year-old Atana. After an argument, she returned to the girl’s dormatory. That was three days ago. Martis is certain she saw Atana during the rehearsals for the bird dance but now she realizes Atana is truly missing. Martis’s search for Atana leads her into a web of conspiracy, one that will threaten to unweave the fabric of their community.

Bottom line: A Murder of Furies is for you if you like your busybodies bold and your cozies ancient.

The strength of A Murder of Furies is the ancient Greek world Kuhns meticulously brings back to life. She uses information hard won through extended research to construct this female-led community dedicated to the goddess, complete with rituals, crafts, healing, and trading. Anyone who loves historic settings will find a lot to love in A Murder of Furies.

Our detective is Martis. At sixteen, turning seventeen, she has seen a lot of change in her family and community. Many cozies revolve around an elder female lead. Martis is what that lead was on the cusp of adulthood. She is thoughtful and insightful and yet will rush into danger without aid or hesitation. She is unwavering in her loyalty to those closest to her.

Standing at the end and looking to the front, the logic of the story is solid. Martis drives this story, effectively changing the path the Bad Guy set in motion and the result of the story. She is a strong lead and one that is fun to follow.

A Murder of Furies is the third in the Ancient Crete series. I have read books 2 and 3. While this mystery storyline stands alone, I found I did benefit from knowing Martis’s history as well as the culture she lived in. I highly recommend reading the first books, IN THE SHADOW OF THE BULL and ON THE HORNS OF DEATH to enhance your enjoyment.
